EV charger grants in the UK: what's actually available

We'd rather tell you straight than let you assume a grant applies when it doesn't. Here's exactly who currently qualifies.

The honest version

If you own a house with a driveway, you almost certainly won't qualify for a government grant on your home EV charger — that scheme ended for homeowners back in March 2022. The grants that exist now are aimed at specific groups: flat owners, renters, and people without off-street parking. We'd rather you know that upfront than be disappointed later.

What changed, and when

The original Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS), which gave most homeowners money off a charger, closed on 31 March 2022. It was replaced with a narrower set of grants aimed at people who don't have the same easy access to home charging that a driveway owner does. From 1 April 2026, the grant amounts under these schemes increased from £350 to £500, and were extended through to March 2027.

Who can actually claim a grant

Flat owners and renters — up to £500

If you own a flat, or you rent any residential property (house or flat) and have private off-street parking, you can claim up to £500 towards a charger, provided you own or have ordered an eligible EV and haven't claimed this or a previous version of the grant before.

Households needing on-street charging — up to £500

If you don't have off-street parking and need a cross-pavement charging solution (a permanent cable channel, not a temporary mat or cover), this grant can help — subject to your local council permitting that kind of installation in your area.

Landlords — up to £500 per chargepoint

Landlords and housing associations can claim towards chargers installed at properties they manage for tenants.

Homeowners with a driveway — not currently eligible

If you own the house you live in and have your own off-street parking, none of the current schemes apply to you. This is the situation most of our customers are in.

So is it still worth it without a grant?

Yes — the case for a home charger was never really about the upfront grant. Charging at home overnight on a cheap tariff still costs a fraction of public rapid-charger prices, and that saving repeats every single charge, for as long as you own the car. The grant was always a nice-to-have on top, not the reason to do it.
